Tune Tramp is a lovely collection of traditional American old-timey tunes and songs tastefully arranged and performed to perfection.
There’s no shortage of excellence here – Erynn Marshall packs in 20 tracks of high energy tracks with 45 guest musicians from all over North America. The album was recorded in 13 different studios.
Marshall is a Canadian born fiddler who now lives in Galax, Virginia. Her devotion to the craft of old-time fiddling in the appalachian style is second to none – she is a well respected teacher and performer and a mainstay of the fiddling scene. She has no shortage of accolades – she was the first person from outside of the US to win the prestigious “Clifftop” Appalachian Stringband Festival in West Virginia in the fiddle division – no small feat.
Some of the more well known guests on this disc include her former The Haints Old Time Stringband bandmates Pharis and Jason Romero, old-time legends The Canote Brothers, Rafe Stefanini and long time recording partner and clawhammer banjo Chris Coole.
Marshall’s fiddle playing is the true gem of this collection, with melodic lines that ring sweet and true, coupled with the driving force of generations of old-time fiddlers that have come before her. She breathes new life into classics such as “Bonaparte’s Retreat” and “Shelvin’ Rock”. ”Milwaukee Blues” and “Tune Tramp” are highlights of some of the vocal offerings of this album.
For avid listeners that someday want to visit some of the great old-time fiddling festivals of Virginia but haven’t been able to get out to them, this disc is the closest thing to being there that you can get.
Tune Tramp is available from CD Baby.
The closest thing you will get to sitting around an old-time jam session with Erynn and her friends.
