Lynn Miles creates solid folk music while dipping her toes into classic country sounds; her road has solid songwriting and a timeless beauty at every turn.
Miles has come a long way since her humble beginnings as a voice instructor at a local Ottawa music store. She has won multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards as well as a Juno for Best Roots & Traditional Album of the Year in 2003 for her album Unravel.
Downpour is Miles’s 12th studio disc.
My initial listening of this album took me back to the older days of country music (that is, before it all started to sound like pop music) – solid songwriting bolstered by musicians that knew their way around the fretboards of their instruments like the backs of their hands. I had to re-listen with careful ears when I learned the entire album was recorded solely by Miles and longtime collaborator Ian LeFeuvre.
Listeners will enjoy their time spent with this album that explores the darkness and lightness of life. Miles paints a picture of humanity whose dark storm clouds are breaking and moving away in the distance as the sun beams through.
“Lesson in Everything” was an instant highlight for me – the beautiful mix of mandolin and minor chords backed with the slight twang of a vibrato heavy electric guitar had me at the first beat. ”I’m going to learn from the darkness and the pain that it brings – because I know there’s a lesson in everything” laments Miles in the chorus.
“My Road” is autobiographical epitome to life on the road as a singer songwriter. “This is my life, this is my choice, these are my words, this is my voice, this is my world, this is my road…” sings Miles in the chorus of her song that will tug on the heartstrings of any musician who has spent some time touring small clubs and bars trying to eek out a living on the road.
This album is full of thoughtful prose at every turn – Downpour is an album you’ll have to listen to a few times to let it’s beauty fully soak in.
