If you’re like us, the thought of a reunited Nickel Creek (the fiery bluegrass trio of Mandolinist Chris Thile, fiddler Sara Watkins and guitarist Sean Watkins) is pretty exciting, and it looks like it might be happening. The trio performed on Wednesday at a CBS Films celebration of the Coen brothers’ new movie “Inside Llewyn Davis,” and hinted that they were recording an album to be released next spring on Warner Music’s Nonesuch label.
Although the band’s last album Why Should the Fire Die? was released in 2005, the individual band members haven’t exactly been hiding their talent. Sara Watkins, in addition to touring with Seattle prog-folkers The Decemberists, has a solo album to her credit; her brother Sean Watkins has been busy with bands Fiction Family and Works Progress Administration; and Chris Thile has of course recorded multiple albums both solo and with The Punch Brothers, Edgar Meyer, and other collaborators — oh, in addition to being a genius.
The icing on this musical cake would certainly be a new Nickel Creek album from this talented trio. Let’s cross our collective fingers that the fire hasn’t died, and that we’ll see one in 2014.
